ACTU Organising Works Program

The Organising Works program, delivered by the ACTU Organising Centre, aims to recruit people into unions and train them in the skills of organising and recruitment.

The program is delivered as a combination of supervised work experience, and nationally accredited structured training. Participants are employed by a Union, and will gain on-the-job exposure to the skills, strategies and knowledge required to work effectively as a union organiser. Participants also attend regular training sessions conducted by the ACTU Organising Centre. This training covers a broad range of topics, including: effective communication techniques; recruitment and development of activists; effective organising and planning; understanding the IR system; negotiations and bargaining; recruitment skills; time management; problem solving; and using OH&S as an organising tool.

The Organising Works program incorporates the nationally accredited qualification BSB41807 Certificate IV in Unionism and Industrial Relations, and participants will submit prescribed assessment tasks to achieve competency in ten (10) Units of Competency.

The Organising Works program has one intake per year. The program will commence in each participating state in early March, and conclude by late November/early December of the same year.

Subject to sufficient enrolment numbers, the ACTU Organising Centre proposes to deliver the program in the following states in 2011:

  • New South Wales
  • South Australia
  • Queensland
  • Victoria
  • Western Australia
