Submission on Legal and Constitutional Affairs on the Sex and Age Discrimination Legislation Amendment Bill 2010

03 November, 2010 | Submission The ACTU has consistently advocated that effective operation of the Sex Discrimination Act 1984 (the Act) requires reforms which deliver:

  • A positive approach including the restatement of the objective of the Act to achieve substantive equality between men and women and the introduction of an obligation to take reasonable and appropriate measures to eliminate sex discrimination as far as possible;
  • New regulatory models that actively uncover discrimination, assist organisations to eliminate discrimination and prevent its recurrence, and enforce non-compliance; and
  • Greater synergy between the Sex Discrimination Act and Equal Opportunity legislation.
