1. ACTU Indigenous Officer

Salary range: $62,154 - $85,378 depending on experience plus 15% superannuation

An exciting opportunity has arisen in the peak body of the Australian union movement for a suitably qualified and experienced person to take on the role of Indigenous Officer at the Australian Council of Trade Unions.

The ACTU is committed to Indigenous employment, education and training, human rights and representation, equity and social justice. This position plays a key role in executing the ACTU’s strategy in this area, advising the ACTU on these issues and  working with ACTU Officers and other staff members in the implementation of ACTU Congress policy and ACTU Executive decisions relating to Indigenous issues.

The successful applicant will ideally have a tertiary qualification in a relevant field, such as public policy, economics, political science, law, sociology or community development and 2 to five years relevant work experience , including working with unions, indigenous organisations, or other policy, advocacy or community groups. However, applicants without these qualifications will still be considered on their merits. This will be a full time position based in Melbourne.

 
Key Selection Criteria

  • A knowledge and understanding of the major issues confronting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and workers.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, including a sound level of knowledge and understanding of both cultures and societies and their protocols from a historical perspective and the issues which impact on them in a contemporary society.
  • Knowledge of and demonstrated commitment to the labour movement.
  • Sound knowledge and understanding of Industrial Relations, the role and structure of unions and the benefits of union membership.
  • A commitment to maintaining effective and open communication with colleagues, and ability to work independently as well as cooperatively with colleagues.
  • Ability to develop and participate in the development of policies, campaigns, strategies and events within the ACTU and broader union movement.
  • Well developed organisational skills with the ability to meet tight deadlines and manage conflicting priorities either autonomously or as part of a team.
  • A commitment to the values of the Trade Union movement.

2. Executive Assistant to Assistant Secretaries

The ACTU wishes to appoint a person to the position of Executive Assistant to the Assistant Secretaries, providing administrative and project support to the two Assistant Secretaries.

The position is based in Melbourne.  The applicant must be eligible to work permanently in Australia. This an ACTU Level 3 position.

 
Key Selection Criteria
  • Commitment to ACTU and union values
  • Capacity to prioritise work, exercise judgement, discretion and initiative whilst providing high level administrative support within a politically sensitive environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Project management, events and research assistance skills
  • Capacity to use the computer applications and technology including:

    Word – Advanced
    Excel – Intermediate
    Power Point – Advanced
    Access – Intermediate
    Outlook- Advanced
  • Capacity to use the Internet and communications technologies – fax, email, telephone system, conference calls, video conferences etc
